Ironwood Designs History:
My name is Matt Shuster, owner of Ironwood Designs. I wanted to share a little bit about myself and the beginnings of Ironwood Designs. My initial entry in the stock manufacturing business, started back in the late 1980’s. I had always wanted a Steyr AUG, but being a college student at the time, it was not affordable. Since I had always loved firearms, and design, I decided to design and build my own bull pup stock for the Ruger 10/22 rifle.
The first units were crude, and were shaped 100% by hand. Inletting was done with a hand held router and some simple templates. I also had to design a trigger system, a butt plate, and other parts to complete the package. On a whim, I signed up for a single table at a local gun show, and sold my first unit. This first sale decided my future, so I started looking into new designs and better production methods. This was all before the internet, so I had to actually speak to people and do tons of phone research to find information. A couple of years later, I acquired an old 4 spindle Manual carving machine, (duplicator), and was able to increase the productivity of my bull pup production. I started regularly attending the now defunct, Great Western Gun Show, in Pomona, (Southern California). It was a great experience, and a great gun show, as most of the firearms community was there in person. Back when Gun List and Shotgun news were 1” thick, well, most of the vendors from those publications were in attendance, so there was a wealth of knowledge and demand on tap.
People started asking if I could build other stocks, like M1 Garands, M1As, AKs, HKs & FALs. This is when things started to roll a bit quicker. I was finishing up with my degree in Marketing at San Jose State University, so I was finally able to put more time into the business. At that time we were making a ton of one off parts, and starting seeing some potential for these products. Somewhere between 1996 & 97, we were contacted by First Son Enterprises, regarding producing AK stock sets. These sets were to be combined with the first US made trigger parts, for ATF 922R compliant conversions stock sets. We actually submitted our stock parts to the ATF to be verified as legitimate for ATF approval, along with the trigger parts. Since there were hundreds of thousands of post ban import AKs, in circulation, it seemed like a very good idea. We were still producing the sets on our little carving machine, and this was not fast enough, or clean enough. With some partial investment from First Son Ent., were purchased a copy lathe, (shapes & sands exterior of part), moved from the garage to a small local shop, and started knocking out thousands of sets per year.
The copy lathe was spitting out the shaped and sanded parts, and we were still using carving machine for inletting. Based on the numbers that we were producing, we decided to look into CNC machinery. In 1999, we took possession of our 4 axis twin spindle CNC router. This made a huge difference in speed and accuracy. We were now able to handle larger production orders, and put out higher toleranced parts.
As all good things must come to an end, the contract work with for First Son Ent. did. After 2 1/2 years, we were sort of stopped dead in the water. Having not had to advertise or do any other R&D during that time, a new direction was needed. We then started our R&D quest, and began to learn the ins and outs of 3D designs software, fixturing, tooling, etc... I had avoided some of the engineering 3D design packages and leaned towards a more intuitive design software, which suited my personality and methods.
Over the last 10 years, we have made great strides in improving the quality of our parts, and our design and programming capabilities. Our variety of products that we offer had risen dramatically, as well as our customer base. Our production parts have been used by over 20 different firearms manufacturers, smaller specialty build shops and distributors. Large and small, we have serviced a wide variety of military stock needs in the US industry, and additional sales worldwide.
In the last year, we have moved into much larger production facility, and have invested new technologies that will greatly enhance our reverse engineering capabilities. Our latest work has been some of our best, and we look forward to surprising the industry in 2011, with some new and innovative products.
At this point in time I can safely claim that we are the largest manufacturer in North America, of the widest variety of military reproduction wood stocks for AK47s, FN FALs, and AR15. IWD was first to market with US made AK and FN FAL stock sets. We are committed to bring more, out of production, and new custom stock parts, to the market.
