Bullpup 10/22 conversions

The Ironwood Designs name and business were started back in the late 1980s with the building of bullpup conversions for the 10/22. Bullpups have always been our passion, and it shows in the detail and quality of the two models that we currently offer. These models include a conversion based on the Steyr AUG, and based on the super rare Walther WA 2000, as pictured above in our banner.

SG 2000 conversion

Model SG 2000, is based on the Walther WA 2000 counter sniper rifle, which was manufactured by Walther in the late 1970s. Very few of the

WA models were actually produced. Original Walther production numbers fall somewhere between 170 to 230 units total. Only a handful made

it into the US.. Original copies have gone up for sale in the last few years, ranging between $35-40,000. A radical design for the time and

expensive to produce, they were discontinued. Being a bull-pup enthusiast, and after discovering a rare picture of a WA 2000 in a random gun

book, I decided to create my own version, utilizing the 10/22 as the base action. Why the 10/22? Well, it is the one of the most highly

accessorized firearm of the last two decades, so barrels and trigger upgrades could be found easily. Plus, it’s a great little rifle, that is very

modular and reliable.

In 1995, we began designing our first model SG, and had completed a first total of 13 units by 1996. I personally had done the majority of the

machine work on a small but very nice Clausing bench-top manual mill. Lathe work, and a few other parts requiring CNC cutting were done by

some small local shops. The stocks were made from my own hand shaped patterns, then duplicated on our old carving machine, which now

lives in the state of Alaska. All of my SG designs and drawings were done by scaling that photograph, using an old set of calipers, that were

not all that good. All but 2 of the original SG conversions were sold. I kept the first 2, serial numbered 0 & 00 prototype. Seven years later, in

2003 after establishing ourselves as notable AK and FN FAL stock producers, and having gained substantially more experience with designing

and programming, we decided to do another production run of SGs.

On the 2nd run, 100 units would be produced, including a limited quantity of Kurz ( short ) models, 22 Magnum and a few in alternative metal finishes and colors. Several improvements were made with the bipod, trigger linkage system and scope mount. In addition, the stocks were redesigned from the ground up, and were produced on our CNC router. Our SG conversion was featured in the Jan 2004 issue of The

American Rifleman in the New Products section. This is the current model shown below.

The heart and soul of our conversions is the trigger system. So many aftermarket and home built bull-pup triggers simply do not make the cut

regarding trigger pull. Ours is an all steel and alloy construction, simple and reliable. The SG trigger actually maintains the same weight as the

tuned Ruger trigger, (hidden in the butt stock). We average a 2 1/4 to 2 3/4 Lb pull, very crisp, and consistent.
